I’M IN THE SUB-20 CLUB!
I’ve had this 5k on my schedule for a month. I hadn’t ran a 5k race since the Turkey Trot! I wasn’t expecting to do great – the amount of speed I have done since track ended on May 31? ZERO. I’ve also wayyy cut back on my mileage, going from running 6 days a week to running 3-4 days, all easy runs. I guess a break is just what I needed!
The race started at 10. I woke up around 6:15 when my mom left to go work our garage sale. I went back to bed until 8:45. For breakfast I made a smoothie + peanut butter banana toast.
Then I had to hurry and bike to the race, which was about 3 miles away! I think it was a good warmup.
I wore my new Brooks Pureflows! I think I need to buy another pair – they are only $40 here!
The race started right on time and we were off! Within 10 seconds of starting it started sprinkling and by halfway it was a steady rain. I didn’t mind; I’d prefer running in the rain over blistering heat! It was about 55F.
The course is an out-and-back and I went through the first mile around 6:07. The lead pack was me, my cross country coach, and another guy I didn’t know. We turned around about 9:35ish and headed back to the finish line. At the two mile the random guy started pulling ahead and I tried to stay with him. More than anything, I wanted to break 20. At 2.85 we hit the last hill and it was just one curve to the finish line. I realized I was going to break 20 when I hit the last straightaway and I sprinted in! My official time was 19:25.
My Garmin was .6 off but it was a really cloudy day and my coach said he’s measured the course numerous times, as it’s the route most local 5k’s use.
For only $15 you got a tshirt, medal, and a lunch! I had 2 sloppy joes with my newfound love for them. Then I had them for dinner too. Total of 4.5 sloppy joes yesterday.
Laura also PR’ed!
I got a plaque for being the first female runner.
I was super sore the rest of the day and it was a struggle to walk. Grandma made me take a shower and I spent some time at our garage sale.
I guess the carb loading on pizza the night before was a good idea!
And also a huge congrats to my friend Brittany who qualified for Boston yesterday!! 3:30:12.6. Hopefully someday that will be me!!
Today I’m heading up to Michigan Tech for the week for a Women in Engineering program. I don’t think I’ll be posting while I’m gone so be sure to keep in touch with me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram! π

AHHH!!! That is so exciting!! And you were the first female finisher?? You are so fast!! It’s funny how sometimes our bodies need a little break to function at their very best. Congratulations on an AMAZING race!!
I can’t believe the race was only fifteen bucks!! I’m all for inexpensive races. Especially with a good t-shirt π

You are amazing! What an awesome time, Leigha π

I never run unless I’m training for a 5k. But no amount of training would make me finish it as fast as you did!

Hope you have an amazing day!
Love ya!

I’ve basically accepted that Saturday’s will always be long run day π thanks Bethany!! <3 you too!
Congrats Leigha this is amazing! I can only run 2 miles in that amount of time π I really want to work on my speed, I’m just horrible at motivating myself!
