It’s not too often that I have a free day during the weekend, so last Saturday Mom and I took advantage of it and went to the Eben Ice Caves!
Since Saturday morning is my run day I did a nice and easy seven miles before we left. I don’t get to run a lot during the week since I have basketball practice, so I look forward to those Saturday morning runs so much.
When I got back Mom surprised me with an oatmeal bake! It’s my Pumpkin Oatmeal Bake, just minus the pumpkin. It’s one of my favorites!
Served alongside a green smoothie because I just ran for an hour and I was hungry.
On the way there we stopped at Grandma and Grandpa’s and this was in the backyard.
He built a snowman. Tell me my grandpa isn’t the cutest thing EVER. He built one in his front yard too, and when I got home a few days ago there was one on my deck. I can’t even. So sweet.
The drive to Eben Junction is about 45 minutes from where I live. You know when you get to the caves from a cute little sign and the multitude of cars!
The walk to the caves is just over a half mile through the woods, but it’s a hard one. I had to slide down some of the hills on my butt because there way no way I’d make it trying to walk!
All of the walking is definitely worth it once you get to the caves. It’s so weird. You get up a big hill and suddenly you come up upon these huge sheets of ice!
I just think it’s amazing how a structure like this can form completely by itself in nature. It’s yet another reason why I love my homeland, the Upper Peninsula! I haven’t talked much about it yet, but in the coming future I’d like to have a tab on the blog for the U.P. and post about all of the neat things we have to offer. I was surprised at how many I already have, like Pictured Rocks and picking blueberries! I guess I’m really starting to live up to my blog name, The Yooper Girl. π
Today I’m going to a youth retreat for church! I’ll be gone until tomorrow afternoon, and I’m not sure of my plans for the Superbowl. Next week at school is Snowcoming so I’m sure that will be lots of fun if you remember last year!
If you’re familiar with the U.P., have you ever been to the ice caves?
What are everyone’s Superbowl plans?
Might I recommend making some avocado, artichoke, and kale dip? π

Sounds like a wonderful Saturday. Days spend with your mom are always so nice.
I remember looking forward to my weekend runs so much when I danced a lot – because I didn’t have time for it in the weekends. So I totally get why you look forward to those runs π Running’s wonderful
Have a great weekend

Running is SO wonderful – I hope we can go for a run together someday! π
Such a beautiful place!! Sounds like the perfect day and so fun you got to hang with you mama! I’ve been to the U.P. but I don’t remember it because it was when I was little. Guess I’ll have to go back!
For the SuperBowl I’ll be heading over to a friends house to watch, eat, and cheer for the Patriots!! (I sound like a hard core fan, but I’m really not.)
Have a great weekend!
You were in the U.P.?! That’s awesome!! Do you have family here? If you ever come back you have to let me know (I’m sure you will!)
Haha! I’m not a football fan either. I mainly go to parties for the food π
Okay, I love that you dipped the baked oatmeal in the smoothieβ that’s the way to go π
These ice caves are absolutely incredible!! That looks like such a fun adventure.
Haha, I was wondering if anyone would notice that π the oatmeal bake was too hot so the smoothie cooled it down perfectly!
They were amazing! It’s crazy how they form so naturally!
That oatmeal looks so good. I need to branch out of my typical stove-top oats and try something new!
I haven’t eaten stove top oats in quite a while and I’m surprised to say I don’t miss them!
Your grandpa is awesome – that’s so cool that he made snowmen! Also, you just busted out 7 miles … no biggie π
The ice caves look amazing … I really need to come visit you and see them ASAP!
It’s so weird how 7 miles seems like nothing when a few years ago it was just a dream! And YES. Feel free to come anytime! π
